Here you are the second chapter of The Bridge Between Worlds! Chapter 2 Lauren was sitting on her cramped bed reading when she heard the news. She had been reading in her well worn bible Psalms 46. She had read this passage many times since her dad, Allan, had lost his job, and every time she found the same comfort from it. Jobs were getting scarcer and businesses were starting to cut down on expenses, and this meant people like her father were left unemployed with a family on their hands. The family had been forced to move out of their house and move to a smaller house here in Jackson Virginia. They had been living with very little food, and knew that most of their bills were due in just one week. Now she bent her head in prayer, asking God to please help her family. “Lauren Dad got a job!” Her younger brother, Levi called excitedly as he burst into her room. “Levi stop joking! You know he hasn’t even had an interview with anyone, and Mom is always telling you not to get people’s hopes up. I almost believed you!” Lauren retorted. “He really did! If you don’t believe me come and see for yourself!” He replied. Lauren quickly got out of bed, but then slowed her stride so Levi didn’t see how hopeful she really was. When she got down, she stopped at the sight below. Her mom and dad both had their heads lowered in prayer, and her mom’s cheeks glistened with tears of gratitude, and emotion. After a few moments of thankfulness directed to God, Lauren’s dad spoke up. “Tomorrow I start working at the shoe shop a few blocks down the road. The pay isn’t great, but it will pay the bills and the necessities. It’s gonna be hard but if we work together and trust God, we can pull through this.” Her dad pulled the whole family including Lauren’s younger sister Tina into a big family hug. “Dad! I can’t breathe! levi said as he squirmed to get free. “Alright.” Lauren’s dad said as he released the family from his bear hug. “Then I guess you don’t have to massage your stomach today!” The whole family laughed at this for Levi often rubbed his stomach before meals in an attempt to be able to eat more. A habit that his mother highly disapproved of when company was around. “Lauren I am glad you came down, I was about to call you down to come set the table, when your father arrived with his news. After you finish that dinner will be ready.” Her mom said. ✯ ✯ ✯ Monday, May, 12 1929 Dear Diary, I am so grateful that Dad got a job! He has a pretty nice boss at the shoe store, and enough pay to get us through. He works at the counter helping customers, and selling them products. Sometime his boss promised he will learn to mend shoes. This means he might work there for a while! The shop is very cluttered and everything is either covered in shoe polish, or is shoe polish itself! I asked Dad how he could work in such a mess, and he only laughed at me and said, “that’s my neat little girl talking!” Something always comes through to saden us even when the day seems the brightest.Today I went to the shoe store so I could buy some brass buckles for Mom, talk to Dad, and get a feel for the store. When I walked up to the counter to buy the buckles I had chosen it was my dad’s boss who came up to help me. I started to ask him how much it would be for the two little brass buckles when another girl came bursting in the room. “What is your most expensive pair of riding boots?” The girl said pushing Lauren away and talking directly to her dad’s boss, Ted. Rudely turning his attention away from Lauren he said, “Why, we have a pair of doeskin leather riding boot right over here that look to be about your size.” Lauren realizing this girl must be one of importance for usually just and kind Ted, to treat her thus, said under her breath “Even if this girl must have money, and looks quite nice she sure doesn’t have any manners. Mom’s right beauty is as beauty does.” Not realizing she had said that last line a bit too loud, Rosalie’s eyes got huge and red as she snapped back. Do you know who my father is?!? Andrew Roth, and if you don’t speak to me with respect he could get you thrown in jail!! “Lauren, tell your mother I want to give her those buckles, now how about you come back and visit another day?” Ted dismissed her quickly. “Now Miss Roth do these fit or should we try those black patent leather ones with the beads over there? Uggggghhhh!!!!! I wanted to rip my hair, Ted’s hair, and that girl Rosalie’s hair all out!!! Instead I quietly slipped out, my face beet red with a complicated mix of embarrassment, shame, and anger. I was embarrassed because I insulted her, and that she heard. Ashamed because I felt like I was nothing, because I new better than to think meanly of Rosalie, and because I knew I shouldn’t be mad at her, only sad. I was Mad because of the way she acted more important and better than me, but mostly mad with the way Ted treated me, and decided keeping a rich customer happy, was better than being fair and decent. God!! Why do I keep insulting people? Help me to be nice to people and not get so worked up about things. Help me to forgive Ted and Rosalie for how they… “Lauren?” Called a quiet voice, “Can you turn off your light? I want to go to sleep now.” “Ok Tina I will, just let me finish this, Ok?” She answered her little sister, who she shared her bedroom with. She enjoyed Tina, but missed her own room where they used to live and the privacy and independence she got form it. Help me to forgive Ted and Rosalie for how they treated me, and Thanks again for Dads job God! As she leaned over to turn off her light she noticed the clock on the wall said 11:00. Remembering how early her family had to get up in the morning to go to town, she realized she must have journaled longer than she realized, and Tina was supposed to be asleep hours ago.. Then she switched off her light knowing even before she did, she would have a tough time going to sleep with all her thoughts swirling through her head. Hey there I know this isn't supposed to be posted until next week, but I am leaving tomorrow for the weekend and didn't really have time so we are going to reschedule to Megan's story this week and next week you can find chapter 11 of Monica of Montana!
Here you go: Chapter 1 “Dad! Why can’t I ride Midnight?” Rosalie complained. She wondered why she was ever excited to ride a stupid mare anyway. “Honey, you know you don’t know how to ride yet, and besides Midnight is an expensive, and skittish stallion. You would either break your own neck, or the horse’s.” replied her father. “But I want to,” Rosalie wailed, “and he looks so exciting!” Rosalie looked pleadingly into her father's eyes. “You are ruining my day,” she pouted, “I was so excited, but now you’ve ruined everything, everything.” Her father, whose name was Andrew Roth, almost always gave in to his daughters wishes. This time though, as her pretty blue eyes looked pleadingly into his, he stopped himself. “No!” he almost shouted “That is absolutely ridiculous! You don’t know how to ride, and that stallion is the best and the wildest, out of all the horses in this stable. Would you rather go home without riding today?” “I guess not,” she said sullenly. “Then would you please help Rosalie find a gentle mare for her to ride?” Andrew asked a nearby stable boy. Alright, I will ride another horse, but I will do whatever I want to do and not follow any instructions I don’t like. Rosalie thought. The stable in which they were they were standing in was just one of a huge complex of stables, and other buildings used for quality horse breeding, and stabling, that was called Shady Stables. Among the stalls of many horses and pony’s, at least 100 of the best racing and breeding horses on the east coast, were sheltered there. All the stalls were clean, and the tack stalls held lots of expensive saddles, reins, and other equipment. Shady Stables was situated the rolling hills of Maryland, just about an hour from Rosalie’s family Mansion, in Jackson VA. It attracted people all across the east coast, to ride, stable, and possibly sell or buy horses. After she found a beautiful palomino mare named Marshmallow, she joined a small group of people learning to ride on one of Shady Stables’ many trails, led by a lady named Nicole. After learning how to mount a horse, they slowly learned the basics of riding one. Nicole was very patient, and answered any questions, anyone from the group had. “So when you when you want a horse to stop or slow down pull on the reins. Always pull it very gently, so the horse isn’t hurt, and won’t be be as likely to spook.” Nicole instructed them. “Like you know anything, I can do what I want!” Rosalie stated. “Well if you don’t the horse can get hurt, or frightened at the quick jerk from the reigns. So always pull back gently whatever the case.” Nicole answered. Another person in the group asked, “So when we want them to stop do we pull back, straight, pull the rein down slightly, or what?” “Good question!” After Nicole answered that question, and taught the group many other basic things, they started down a nearby trail. Rosalie’s father, who had been with her this whole time, now turned back to look at some other horses in Shady Stables. Rosalie started enjoying the pleasant ride that twisted and turned through a sunny 1929 spring day, the trees were just beginning to bud, and there was a green haze about everything. She wouldn’t let herself believe this though, because she thought she couldn’t have fun on a horse that wasn’t a sleek black stallion. Even though she was having fun, her attitude wasn’t changed. The whole ride when she wanted to stop for anything, she pulled the reins harder than Nicole advised. The whole group was in single file, with Nicole leading the group and Rosalie just behind. All of a sudden they came to a narrower place in the trail, and a snake was in the way. Nicole pulled on the reins stopping her horse suddenly, but efficiently, tring to keep her horse from spooking. Rosalie on the other hand had gotten into the practice of pulling her reins hard, to prove her point. She jerked hard on them and her horse reared high, and dumped her right in the twisted briers beside the path. “Ohh no! Are you alright?” Nicole asked. “Ow, oh ow” Rosalie cried. “I feel like I broke my neck! I am so scratched up! You should have warned me about the snake! Or at least told me to get a horse that wasn’t so ferocious! That horse was crazy to jump at a harmless snake” “I doubt your neck is broken, just sore and you are scratched up quite a bit. As for Marshmallow, he is one of the gentlest riding horses we have, “ Nicole gently answered. Is anyone willing to escort Miss Roth back to the stables, so she can get cleaned up, and treat those scratches of hers?” “I don’t need anyone’s help! I am perfectly capable to ride my horse back to the stables, without any of your, your, inexperienced students.” Rosalie directed toward Nicole. Many of the other group members muttered under their breath at this. They didn’t dare to say anything out loud though, because they knew who she was, a Roth, and they didn’t want to reckon with her father. “Ok then, I guess we will clean you up as best we can with my first aid kit, and then keep on down the trail.” Was Nicole’s reasonable answer. ✯ ✯ ✯ It was the spring of 1929 and people had money to spend, and women were voting and had a attitude that stated they could do whatever they wanted. Rosalie, at 16, was no exception. Her father was a successful and smart lawyer who went all across the country giving legal advice, and supplied his family with generous amounts of money. Rosalie wore all the new flapper dresses and went to a school that trained wealthy young girls and boys to be silent movie actors. Rosalie was at the school Monday through Thursday and was home in Jackson Virgina on the weekends. The small riding accident happened on Sunday morning which was the day she always went somewhere with her Father. After the ride her family was hosting a dinner and Rosalie hoped a dance at her family mansion that she had to go prepare for. “Bertha!” Rosalie cried. “I need your help with my makeup and hair!” Bertha was the families maid who helped with cleaning and other domestic needs. Bertha hurried in to help her. Rosalie’s fringed white lace dress and small wine red heels contrasted with Bertha’s long black dress and white apron and cap. After Bertha had applied Rosalie's makeup and bright red lipstick, they moved onto her hair. They combed her curly blond hair and scented it with rosewater. Then she put on a glittery white headband with a feather stuck into it and let her curls bob around her shoulders. “Rosalie!” Cynthia, Rosalie's mother called, “I need your help to decorate this room.” “Can’t Bertha do it? I just got dressed! Rosalie whined. “No The guests are going to be here any minute, and you should be seen doing something useful when they arrive, besides Bertha has other preparations to attend to.” Cynthia answered coming out of the dining room. “Only if you let me choose a song to dance too after the dinner.” She bargained, knowing that already she had won. “Fine! Just hurry!” was the impatient answer. After Rosalie had decorated the room, the guests started arriving. They were mainly her father and mother’s friends, but some of the girls and boys at her school were invited too. Rosalie knew that wherever they went a dance inevitably followed. The dinner was a formal one, and the cooks had been producing mouthwatering smells, all day long. There were biscuits, and hot bread rolls, all sorts of exotic meat and soups. There were many types of salads, nuts, and five different sandwiches, along with dozens of deserts, and drinks. The table was adorned with fresh apple blossoms on a pure white lace tablecloth, and was set with fine china, with silver utensils set in their places beside them. The guests all wore the newest fashions, and were sat down at their places by Bertha. Rosalie, even though she loved fashion and dancing, hated formal dinners and being proper and ladylike. She would much rather be at a dance, or romping around the nearby Silver Pool, which was more like a lake. Right now though she was on her best manners for two reasons. First her mother had given her a good talking to that morning, about being mannerly, and ladylike. Secondly, who was that nice boy sitting right across from her? All through the dinner she caught hurried glances at him, and listened to whenever he talked. When anyone talked to him she listened, and she finally heard his name, Edward. Now with that information and a little cunning she had all she needed to get a dance partner. Don't worry I am not giving up my stories, but in this case giving you more to read!
